Cruising is a fantastic way to see the culture and diversity Fiji has to offer and one of the best I’ve experienced is on board the Captain Cook Cruise which departs from Port Denarau Fiji, just a 5 min drive from Denarau Resorts and just 30 minutes from the Nadi Airport.
We were on a four day cruise which explored the Southern Yasawa Islands giving us a taste of the culture, landscapes and beautiful tropical beaches this area has to offer. The days always included a swim, snorkelling or lazing on one of Southern Yasawa’s many Islands, but certainly the activities both on and off the ship held as much interest as the beaches and coral that awaited us each of the stunning Fiji days.
Every evening the Captain Cook Cruises local crew would perform traditional music and dances which were entertaining and informative. The crew were happy to share the hidden gems that make their culture unique which made every evening a special experience – the Fiji people are renowned for their hospitality and if you ever visit Fiji you’ll know what I mean….Bula! There were also scheduled evening seminars in the conference room of the cruise ship where guests could learn about the local wildlife, landscape and some of the in-depth history of the local people.

Island excursions will always be the highlight of the cruise and if you ever book a Captain Cook Cruise (or any cruise for that matter) make sure you don't skip the land excursions as this is the best opportunity to meet real locals. We were invited as guests to attend the local Nalauwaki Church Service which is audio heaven for gospel choir singing and a special cultural gem to witness as westerners.

We were also privileged to visit Namara Village School on Waya Sewa Islands. The children performed a number of musical numbers for us before we were taken individually by a child to see some of their school work and classrooms. Outside the local women had their arts and crafts on display. A travel tip – buy your souvenirs from the local villages as they are significantly cheaper than the resorts and in Nadi township.

The traditional evening at Yalobi Village on Waya Island was my personal highlight. The experience of the “Sevusevu” ceremony and drinking of Kava and uncovering the “Lovo” which is the earth oven where traditional Fijian food is cooked, offers a spectacular insight into Fijian culture. As expected, after dinner we were again treated to a Spectacular “Meke” which is a celebration of song and dance for our last evening on the cruise.
Vinaka Vakelevu (thank you very much) all the lovely people of Fiji. These beautiful Islands are still one of our favourite places to recommend! If you've never cruised before there are a number of huge benefits unique to this type of travel. Gone are the days of the 'Love Boat' stereotype. There is a cruise to suit all types of traveller and it's better than you could have ever imagined!
